I bought my first car for 600 cash. I've very occasionally had that kind of sum on me at other times. I do almost always get 200 when I go to an ATM, so for a week or so afterwards I have 100+ on me, usually.

A couple of times I've had to carry cash sums in the interval (£500,£1000) to or from a bank. Both times were due to faffing at one or other end of a tenancy.

Depends if a bearer bond counts as "cash".
If so, I'm in the £100,000-£1M category.

Lower end of the range for me - I think I took more than £2000 out of the bank once, the year I went away with 70 people and had to give them enough cash for the week's food.

I think even given tenancy-faff, I've never actually carried >£1k outside of a bank

Ah, but you should mug the person who ever carries the greatest amount of cash only if the value curve is vertical. Otherwise you want the expectation -- balance this with what's the largest amount you *regularly* carry :)

…in which case you might find this poll from a couple of years ago informative.

I might have had £200 or so on me once when I helped out with a Meals on Wheels delivery on the day everyone pays for their week's meals... But it may have been a lot less than that. I can't remember - I only had it for 5 minutes.

I had to pay six months' rent up front once, and cash was the easiest way to do it, since the bank was right next to the letting agency.

When we sold the L200 the guy turned up with 15k cash and it was scary! Both because we had to carry it into town to bank it but also because it felt like we had far fewer guarantees that we hadn't just been ripped off than any other form of payment!

Actually on second thoughts I did once have over £1,000 in cash, from one side of Fitzroy Street to the other (bank and building society).

If we're talking strictly UK money, i think i've only handled a 10p coin.

I once held a cheque for £10,000,000 signed by a Mr. R. Maxwell (a failed attempt to second-guess the share distribution rules in one of the mid-1980's privatisations).

... because even today the best way to do an instant bank transfer from one bank to another is to get cash out of bank A and physically carry it to a branch of bank B. They could do it electronically, but want to charge £20 or greater for it basically because they make all their profits from inconvenience fees.
