In the last few months, I've been conspired against by domestic appliances. The boiler failed on Christmas eve. The dishwasher sprang a (hidden) leak in early January - it wasn't noticed until the floor tiles started cracking, and detaching themselves from the floor. Shortly after, the washing machine also sprang a leak, presumably in professional sympathy. Then the vacuum cleaner went BANG, very loudly and very smokily. My tape player started running very oddly indeed, and ate an irreplaceable live recording. Then, in early March, the kettle stopped kettling. The only things that have actually been reliable this year have been the cars. So far...
Sometimes, just sometimes, inanimate objects can make people look reliable.
However, people, reliable or not, are far more interesting and worthwhile than inanimate objects - a point that geeks like me are rather prone to forget.
