I use easyCinema (http://dvd.easycinema.com): you buy blocks of 4 DVDs to rent, for £8 a shot. Each block of credit lasts 90 days, during which period you can keep each disc for however long you want.
Alternatively, if you don't want to watch so often, Amazon offer two DVDs a month for £4.
I admit I get a 20 quid credit if you sign up via that link, feel free to sign up without using it. It doesn't kick in unless you like them enough to stay for three monthly payments.
But lovefilm so far have been excellent. They get the next film out to you the same day they receive your disc back. They're good about sending series of DVDs in the right order - and on the rare occasion they've got it wrong they've sent me the right disk as an extra straight away and told me to hang on to the out of order one. They also compensated us for the films we'd missed out on as a result of the postal strike. We got 2 extra disks to watch for the one in the summer, and for the recent one they gave us 3 extra credits and a week's free. And if a disk goes missing they send a new one as soon as you report it, although there is some paperwork I'll have to fill in once I get it from the Royal Mail.
We're on the 2 disc at a time package, which suits us quite well, and means we've nearly always got something at home to watch. If you pay for several months in advance you get a discount, and occasionally they have a "sale" where this discount is increased. This package allows 2 discs to be "out" with you at any time, and you can keep each disc as long as you want. Obviously the more discs you watch the better value the monthly packages are. There are some n-disc-a-month packages which are a lot cheaper, as well as the n-discs-at-a-time one.
Oh, and they now have a "multiple list" thing - so stuff we'd like to watch now is on my standard list and I've got a second list for low priority stuff. If you're on a package which allows more than one disk at a time you can set it to send each disk from a different list.
And if you like you can rent console games too, though the unlimited-game-and-film packages are more expensive than just films. They also have downloads available (some free, some paid). And have blu-ray and HD-DVD discs too if you have a player that will play them, though I don't know how good the selection is.
Prices:
* £3.99 2 discs per month (1 at a time)
* £7.99 4 discs per month (2 at a time)
* £9.99 Unlimited discs per month (1 at a time)
* £12.99 Unlimited discs per month (2 at a time)
* £14.99 Unlimited discs inc. games (2 at a time)
Oh and you get the first 2 weeks free as standard, I don't know if that's still true with the referal.
Yeah, they're definitely fine. And you get a discount off *bought* DVDs while you're signed up for *rented* ones. But like I say, the choice wasn't as wide as LoveFilm's.
Ah, it seems my referral link gets you a month free rather than the standard 2 weeks. And again, I get nothing unless you like them enough to pay for 3 months.
Richard may not be eligible for the trial as it's one per household, hard to say. I think pointing out that I no longer live there and hence you're a different household should be good enough, but whether you can convince their computers of that is another question.
We have 3 discs at a time (they don't offer that any more!) and use two lists, one for feature films which we have one disc from, and one for episodics and shorter things which we have two discs from. It all works very well.
Lovefilm aren't bad. I only stopped using them as I ran out of time to watch films. Though I may rejoin and watch TV series now they've started pay-per DVD.
Lovefilm are good (we had a free trial, which was great, but currently I shouldn't be finding more things to fill an evening with that aren't my thesis). They have persisted in sending me email long after I cancelled my account, though, which is mildly irritating.
I used lovefilm for a while. I really liked them, good service, loads of odd films, I was looking for foreign films at the time and they even had Icelandic ones. I stopped the subscription as I ran out of films I wanted to watch and had a backlog of TV series but I'd sign up again if I wanted film or TV
I've been using LoveFilm (and also have referral voucher type things if they won't accept you as being a different household from lnr (or if anyone else wants one)). I've considered cancelling it because it seems to take us weeks to get around to watching anything, which makes it not very good value, but that's not their fault. Our waiting list is now mostly children's films.
That's probably sensible. /me goes to look at current selection of packages. Hmm - "Your current package ('2 disc package', £12.99 per month ) is no longer available for new customers." But the new customer signup page shows "Unlimited 2" at £12.99 as the most popular option, unless I can't read. Maybe they just changed the name when they introduced the limited versions. On the other hand changing to the options that include games discs would probably give higher usage, if not by me. On the other other hand possibly the children have enough games already.
