OK, so that demonstrates that it basically works. But how well, on a scale from lousy to awesome?

(I ask because it's not impossible that I might be in the market for a new monitor of decent size some time soon. I'm tempted by the insane 30" ones, but a 24" is more justifiable and has a better Wife Acceptance Factor.)

I'm pleased with it. It's sharp, the colors are bright and bold, blacks are solidly black. Viewing angle is more than adequate. Its built-in card reader gets on with my Mac, and the side of the monitor is a more convenient location than under the table. It's got lots of kinds of video input, probably making it as future proof as reasonably possible (I buy computers much more often than I do monitors).

It doesn't have built-in speakers. Not an issue for me; it might be for you.

It is at the expensive end of the range - you could get a 24" monitor for somewhere around half as much, but reviews left me believing that you get what you pay for.

Having physically bigger pixels than my previous monitor produced an illusion: I felt initially like I had less screen space, even though it had both more pixels and occupied a wider field of view. The reason, I assume, is that my mind judges these things by looking at the size of text, icons, etc, which were bigger (because the pixels were bigger - 1200 high in both cases but the new monitor is deeper). A powerful illusion: I had to reduce the speed of my trackball to cope.

Speakers? Gosh, no. I want lots of pixels, and good ones, and that's pretty much all I care about.

I have the same impression as you about the difference between the 2408WFP and, say, the E248 or whatever they call it.

Interesting illusion. Now that you mention it, my laptop feels like it has a bit more screen (relative to my desktop system) than it really has, and that could be why. Maybe I should get one of those laptops with the same pixel-count as the 2408, but that's a bit expensive.

It does seem to be that you get what you pay for with monitors, though once you get to a certain point you tend to be paying for one very specific area.

The cheap Dell monitors are not worth it, I've got one here at work and it's horrible. The more expensive Dell ones are okay. If you're doing anything where you need accurate colour then NEC have monitors that will point and laugh at the Dells, but you'll pay for them, If you want a 30" panel then you'll really pay for it.
