I fairly often have cause to go form King’s Cross to Waterloo (and subsequently back again). Usually I take either the Victoria or Piccadilly line and change onto the Northern Line at Warren St or Leicester Square; is one of these likely to be reasonably reliably quicker than the other? Or is there some quicker route still I could take?

Victoria Line to Green Park, then change onto the Jubilee to Waterloo. Far quicker than anything involving the Northern Line.

Agreed, long walk to change, but fewer stops and a faster line.

And outside rush hour I'd put my bets on a bus (68? not sure but I think there is one) beating even that, depending on your exact destination in Waterloo.

Close but no cigar - it's the 59 (the 68 runs on the same route from Waterloo but terminates at Euston)

Ah yes. My general policy is in any case to take any bus that is pointing in the right direction, and change if necessary.

Seconded, Victoria and Jubilee are both nice and fast.

Victoria line to Vauxhall and pick up the train there works well too (assuming the train you want stops at Vauxhall).

Going to disagree with this - changing at Green Park is nearly always wrong - it's miles!

Victoria to Oxford Circus, change onto Bakerloo. The interchange is cross platform (literally), and it's the fastest route from Kings Cross to Waterloo.

Yep. The Oxford Circus cross-platform interchange is the key. Changing at Green Park is never the right answer - everything is miles from everything else. The Vauxhall trick mentioned above is a good one too - it's not far from the Victoria to the surface platforms.

What they all said. The right answer is nearly always Victoria-Line-and-something if that's an option, and the Northern and Central are the slowest deep lines, I think.
