Goodrich Castle

12th century Norman castle, albeit named for an English thegn.

You can get to the top of the keep.

There is modern glass in the chapel windows. I don’t know if anyone still holds services there.

English Heritage page about the castle.

Symonds Yat Rock

…or rather, the view from it.

We could see a peregrine through the telescope set up there, but it was much too far away for me to be able to photograph.

Perrygrove Railway

There was an attached adventure playground, which the accompanying small children had a lot of fun with.

Clearwell Caves

Ancient iron workings.

Apparently they hold BBQs down there; this is the bar:

There’s life down there, though generally only in the light.

…and there wasn’t much light.

Hay On Wye

As full of bookshops as advertized. The cinema bookshop had the best range and by a long way the most coherent organization, but nevertheless wasn’t the only place I spent money.

The Devil’s Pulpit

Apparently the Devil would stand here to taunt the monks of Tintern Abbey below. We didn’t see any devils, but then we didn’t see any monks either, which would explain it.

Cows pulled strange faces at us on the way.

We made our way down into the valley; steep in places, and a substantial walk.

Tintern Abbey

12th century Cistercian abbey on the banks of the Wye.

Bath time.

The Devil’s Pulpit again.

Where we stayed

Yay, what lovely photos! I took a nearly identical one of Hay on Wye (the first one, the view from the castle bookshop) when we were there on the 18th July :-)

It is indeed, although don’t get lost driving unless you like single-track windy roads with occasional tractor l-)

(pardon belated comment, I'm always very behind on LJ I'm afraid.) Fantastic photos - I particularly like the ones of Becky on the trampoline :-)
