What does it mean when your dream apparently uses one friend as a symbol for another?

That you should be glad that your friends aren't being used as cymbals?

I think they, or at least their dream-selves, ought to be glad of that more than me! I wonder if the character of a person in my dreams is particularly directly informed by whatever mental model my more conscious self has of them?

Perhaps. But dreams tend to be deeply random things anyway, which you shouldn't read too much into.

Often. Sometimes they are good at bringing worries to the surface.

They can be, but they can also create worries where none could reasonably be expected to exist. And worrying is the first step on the road to many bad things.

I seem to be quite capable of coming up with worries without the assistance of dreams...

Do you ever worry about offending people by not replying to emails?

Yes, and also about being indecisive.

Reply duly sent.

BTW do you know if it's this week that the new karate beginner's class starts?

It could create quite a clash.

I don't know, but I was appalled at myself when I realised once that the fact someone had been nasty to me *in a dream* had affected the way I behaved to them the next day - I was very cool and a bit upset, exactly as if we had had a huge disagreement, and it took me a while to twig why, and how stupid this was!

*grin* It's only silly if you remember you had the dream, though.

I always find it amusing when close friends/family come up to me and tell me how shocked they were by my terrible/mean behaviour in their dream.

The kind of dream spillover I get follows from a dream in which (usually relatively minor) problem of some sort turns out to be solved, only to be confused sometime much later during the day when I realize that it was just a dream.
