Jessops will sell you the 100mm f/2.8 macro USM lens (http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=155&modelid=7400), which was used for all but the bird, for £406. It's designed to fit Canon SLR cameras, not compacts.
And what did you use for the bird, which I forgot to say was deeply impressive, especially when compared with my ongoing series of out-of-focus ducks...
70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM (http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=150&modelid=11922). In this case at 270mm. Blackbirds do seem to be among the braver of birds, but this one let me get unusually close nonetheless.
