It's a little known fact that the uisgebeatha is unable to merge any of these (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English-language_vowel_changes_before_historic_r#Mergers_before_intervocalic_r).

There was (and maybe still is) a phonetics lecturer at Cambridge who merged tar, tower, and tire, and (quite deliberately, I'm sure) used these words as his canonical examples of homonyms in English.
