Like lots of geeks, I thought, "oh, founding a cult would be cool!" But actually it really sucks -- cf. scientology. After all, I find it incredibly difficult to follow normal levels of social protocol and politeness without feeling fake, how could I bear to say things and let people naively believe them without screaming "think for yourself, I don't know any better than you"...?

But I made a resolution that if I ever couldn't cope with my life any more, I could run away and live hand-to-mouth somewhere _without_ any death being involved, and it would always be better.

[x] Maintain denial, reasoning that if you never have a mid-life crisis, you never reach the middle of your life, so achieve immorality.
[x] Begin to mope more firmly about all the books you've never written, places you've never been, music you've never composed, etc.
[x] Aspire to a legacy and realise why some people see having kids as the simplest solution.
[x] Start feeling less confident about leading your life and trusting the right special someone or some people will turn up, start fretting a bit about dying lonely.

Not that I actually worry overmuch about any of this day to day, you understand. Just when some git posts an LJ poll about it. :-p

[x] 1st sentence, paragraph 2

I'm trying to work out how many of those I've already done. Depends on how large the inflatable penguin has to be, and how inappropriately young the partner. (And I so would buy a house on a flood plain if it was on stilts.)
