[Poll #311278]

(If you want to quantify this, interpret the questions in terms of mean scores on a hypothetical arithmetic test.)

I assume that A-level Further Maths and NatSci 1A maths qualifies me as a mathematician by training? Apologies if you only wanted mathmos.

That's more maths than your average maths degree from Blogsville ex-poly...

You know I don't think that most of the ex-polys are that bad.

I went to one and whilst I didn't do a maths degree the one I got I worked hard for and am proud of the uni that I went to.

Sorry I wasn't bright enough to get in to a 'real' university.

You probably make up for it by being able to spell 'arithmetic' and 'prove'...

They were very kind, they taught me to read and write and everything at Blogsville ex-poly ;)

I agree with you here, I nearly said it myself already, but I'm less qualified to judge.

*giggle* I have several puns in my head about qualified and degrees and stuff but they're all sitting there refusing to come out.

Pretend I said something funny here.

I'm not saying they're bad, but (for example) Sheffield Hallem do less maths in a maths degree than a physical natsci taking all the maths options in Cambridge. They don't even do tensors until 4th year. This doesn't mean Sheffield Hallem doesn't teach people anything, it teaches them a fair amount. But Cambridge natsci is insane.

TBH it has surprised me how good my maths is, measured against American job applicants who majored in maths at respectable institutions.

Yes. Although looking at the number of people I managed to offend in the rest of the thread by suggesting that some degrees don't contain as much maths as other degrees, I've not made myself popular. Ah well, either I'm telling a harsh truth as it is and being brave enough to stand against the fluffy liberalism that all are equal, or I'm guilty of gross stereotyping and oversymplification. Or both ;-) I hope the syllabuses speak for themselves...

That's okay, you should try coming over here and suggesting that the domestic manufacters' declining share of the US market is because, in general, they make crap cars. (-:
