Burglary

Our house was broken into today. My laptop was stolen, along with LNR's camera and MP3 player and an old cellphone. Nothing else appears to be missing.

We've had a first visit from the police. SOCO should be visiting tomorrow. The window has been sorted. We've not called our insurers yet as they aren't open in the evenings and in any case we won't have a crime number until the police have done some more paperwork.

This seems like an excellent point at which to remind people to back up your data regularly. I've lost a bit but once my laptop is replaced I should be able to get back to the point I was at a week or so ago. (That's not really the main worry, in this case, but I don't propose to go into that in a public posting.)

I lost a hard drive, and my mail with it, last month. Have i even so much as researched a backup solution? Ha ha.

May the culprits be found and thrown into the Thames.

USB hard drive + ~500 lines of Python for dump, verify, restore and housekeeping. If the restore still works now it's actually needed then I'll tidy it up for publication.

I hope they catch the thieves.

I do daily backups to another computer on the attic, but I fear that if they take the portable they might also take that computer and the firewire HD and my DVD backup images.

And offsite backup is a little over the top. So did they miss the USB HD or was it more hidden away?

It was in more-or-less open view, though it's not very big and it was on an untidy desk. I guess I got lucky.

I don't think offsites are over the top as such (houses burn down as well as getting burgled) - they are a bit of a faff to organize though.

Hey. Bummer.

Sounds like they had some very specific ideas about what they wanted, though.

Hope the police nail the buggers. Not that that really makes up for the feelings of having your space invaded, though.

Crap. Oh dear, I hope you're ok.

And kudos for backup. I remember a rather folorn poster on Mitcham's Corner saying someone had stolen their laptop with their thesis.

Ouch. Sounds as if we have a rather prolific criminal .. (given that someone tried to break into my place a couple of weeks ago). Hope things work out ..

That's awful news, Richard, it's happened to me more than once and it's a horrible, horrible feeling. I've posted much the same in [livejournal.com profile] lnr's LJ; if only there was more that I could do to help.

Gah, bastards:-( Hope they catch them, and you can either get your stuff back, or sort out insurance.

As with many others, wish I had something more useful to say/do. In the meantime, hope all is well.

Sorry to hear it. Having your space invaded like that is really horrible. :-(

Well done for having reasonable backups.

Poor you! This seems to be a theme right now though, as my place was broken into last week too. They didn't take much, luckily, but the biggest inconvenience was having to take half a day off work to sort it out :-(.

I am setting my burglar alarm every time I go out now..
