Our house was broken into today. My laptop was stolen, along with LNR's camera and MP3 player and an old cellphone. Nothing else appears to be missing.
We've had a first visit from the police. SOCO should be visiting tomorrow. The window has been sorted. We've not called our insurers yet as they aren't open in the evenings and in any case we won't have a crime number until the police have done some more paperwork.
This seems like an excellent point at which to remind people to back up your data regularly. I've lost a bit but once my laptop is replaced I should be able to get back to the point I was at a week or so ago. (That's not really the main worry, in this case, but I don't propose to go into that in a public posting.)

Date: 2006-01-21 10:22 pm (UTC)I do daily backups to another computer on the attic, but I fear that if they take the portable they might also take that computer and the firewire HD and my DVD backup images.
And offsite backup is a little over the top. So did they miss the USB HD or was it more hidden away?

I don't think offsites are over the top as such (houses burn down as well as getting burgled) - they are a bit of a faff to organize though.
