Was England ever on the verge of becoming an Islamic state? In 1215 King John was forced to accept the Magna Carta, that touchstone of English liberties.
Oh, dear. How The Times has gone downhill. In 1215 King John accepted Magna Carta. No definite article needed.
John wouldn't have been the only medieval ruler recorded as making conversion offers to foreign powers that would have been unacceptable to their subjects, though the ones that spring to mind were between different variants of Christianity.
Also he wouldn't be the only Norman ruler to treat with the Muslims; the Norman lords of Sicily found having an excommunication-proof army quite handy when in conflict with the Pope.
I suppose the historical Angevin alliances with Spanish princes puts them only a hop away from Morocco, too.
None of this rules out the likelihood that Paris was just traducing his enemy however l-)
